Instructor: Simon Varey. This course meets MTWRF 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. in DE 203.

In this course we will explore and evaluate important concepts in the ethics of peace, war, and defense. We will look at questions such as: Is war ever morally justified? If so, under what circumstances? What may soldiers, and other combatants, in a war morally do? How does the moral status of combatants and non-combatants differ, if at all? In this class, you will have to struggle with philosophical concepts that you may not have engaged before. You should be prepared to work hard and think, argue, read, and write rigorously.
