Existential Philosophy (PHIL 224.001)
Instructor: Ben Bagley. This class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 12:00 – 12:50 p.m. in Caldwell 103.
The topic of this course will be the French existentialists of the middle of the twentieth century, with a principal focus on Jean-Paul Sartre and his treatise Being and Nothingness. However, we will supplement our study of that text with attention to some of Sartre’s other philosophical writing and creative work, including his novel Nausea and his play No Exit, and to work by Simone de Beauvoir and Albert Camus. In doing so, we will grapple with a wide range of issues in epistemology, philosophy of mind, and ethics.
