PHIL 80.001 – FYS: Short Stories and Contemporary Social Problems
Instructor: Luc Bovens. This course meets MW 3:35 – 4:50 p.m. in CW 103.
We will explore contemporary social, political, and moral issues through short stories in world literature and connect these stories with newspaper and magazine articles. The course will use resource materials from my Teaching Ethics with Short Stories website. It offers students the opportunity to read work by prominent writers in world literature and to analyze and discuss contemporary social problems. In addition, it fulfills the role of a first-year seminar in that students will be introduced to library research, learn how to critically assess source materials in the press, write a research paper, and develop discussion and presentation skills.
