Topic: Love and Human Nature

In this course we will explore the connection between love and human nature. We will focus on literary and cinematic expressions of various philosophical views. Works by Plato, Marcel Proust, Andrei Tarkovsky, Margaret Atwood, and perhaps others will be studied. These texts will be supplemented with some short pieces by academic philosophers including Simone de Beauvoir and Martha Nussbaum. Students will write short reaction papers and two essay examinations. Students who prefer to write a final paper instead of doing the final examination may do so.

Prerequisite: 1 PHIL course.
