Making Sense of Ourselves (PHIL 112/001)
Instructor: Luke Elson. This course meets Monday – Friday from 9:45 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. in Caldwell 103.
An exploration of how some great thinkers have tried to understand who we are, what that means, and how we should live our lives.
Did we evolve, or were we created by a divine being? Can we explain the presence of evil in the world? Would it be good to be immortal, or would it rob our lives of meaning? Are humans rational, selfish creatures? These are huge and fascinating questions, and we’ll only be able to sample each.
Readings will include selections from the Book of Job, Simone de Beauvoir, Dostoevsky, Hume, Charles Darwin, and Ayn Rand.
