PHIL 292.001 – Introducing and Integrating Philosophy into Primary and Secondary Schools

Instructor: Steven Swartzer. This course meets TR 3:30 – 4:45 p.m. in PE 216.

This is an experiential learning course designed for intermediate and advanced students with an interest in philosophy and/or education.  In this class we will explore philosophical questions related to young people, and learn how to engage with young people about philosophical questions.  We will read selections from both historical and contemporary philosophers, educators, and social scientists to look at various perspectives regarding issues such as children and agency, moral development, and the ability of young people to engage in philosophical theorizing.  This is an experiential learning class in that students will lead philosophy discussions at local schools, and will develop their own lesson plans that help young people engage in their own philosophical explorations.

Permission of the instructor is required to enroll in this course.

Prerequisite: 2 prior PHIL courses.
