PHIL 230.001 Experience and Reality
Instructor: Robert Smithson. This course meets MTWRF 9:45 – 11:15 a.m. in CW 103.
What is the relation between the mind and the physical world? Does our experience accurately represent reality? Why does the universe exist? Do humans have free will? What is the nature of the self? What is the nature of conscious experience? Is time travel possible? Metaphysics is the study of these basic questions about the world and our place in it. In this introductory course, we will consider how philosophical arguments might be used to decide these issues. The course will be structured in six units: world, space & time, self, free will, mind, and existence.
