PHIL 78.001 – FYS: Death as a Problem for Philosophy: Metaphysical and Ethical

This seminar will investigate a variety of philosophical issues related to death and human extinction. Topic to be covered will include: Why is it bad to die? Is it bad for the person who dies, or just for those left behind? Is it possible to survive the destruction of one’s body? Why are we more concerned with dying later rather than with being born earlier? How significant would human extinction be? How much of our ordinary activities depends on the continued existence of humanity after our personal death? As well as many other topics related to death and extinction.
