PHIL 63.001 – FYS: Mind, Brain, and Consciousness

When we talk about consciousness, what phenomenon are we referring to? Can conscious phenomena fit in an otherwise materialistic world? What is the relationship between the brain and the conscious mind? What is a philosophical zombie? Can AI be conscious? In this course, we will explore different answers the these and other related questions.
Students will be introduced to philosophy and its methods, and will develop their critical thinking, writing, and presentation skills, as well as their abilities to reason with others and communicate effectively.
