PHIL/POLI/ECON 384.001 – Gateway to Philosophy, Politics, and Economics

Instructor: Luc Bovens. This course meets MW 11:15 a.m. – 12:05 p.m. in GA 008, with a recitation on Fridays.

This interdisciplinary course provides an overview of conceptual tools used to analyze issues at the intersection of philosophy, politics, and economics (PPE). We cover major authors in political philosophy (Locke, Hume, Smith, Marx, Mill, Hayek, Rawls, Nozick and Sandel) and core ideas in game theory, social choice, and public choice. We explore applications in contemporary social issues such as automation and unemployment, freedom of speech, nudge policies, poverty and inequality, social mobility, and markets on the margin.
