Instructor: Fabian Wendt. This course meets MWF 1:20 – 2:10 p.m. via remote synchronous (RS) instruction.

Freedom and authority are two of the most important concepts in contemporary political philosophy, but at least at first sight they are in tension with each other. In the first half of this course we will debate what freedom is and why it is valuable. In the second half we will discuss whether and how the authority of the state can be vindicated if we are to respect individual freedom.

Prerequisite: 1 PHIL course.
