PHIL/POLI/PWAD 272.002 – The Ethics of Peace, War, and Defense
Instructor: J. Carl Ficarrotta. This course meets MWF 1:25 – 2:15 p.m. in HN 130.
This course introduces various approaches to the moral problems we find in waging war and seeking peace. We will explore realism (the view that it is not appropriate to evaluate international conflict in moral terms), pacifism (a family of claims that share a strict moral prohibition against military violence), the Just War framework (which attempts to regulate warfare in moral terms), prospects for a more peaceful world (via a Kantian-style internationalism) and several special topics in military ethics.
