PHIL/POLI/PWAD 272.001 – Ethics of Peace, War, and Defense
Instructor: John Lawless. The course meets MTWRF 1:15 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. in GL 304.
This course examines moral questions and issues pertaining to warfare, defense, and national security. In the first part of the course we will use Michael Walzer’s classic book, Just and Unjust Wars, to discuss traditional conceptions of just war theory. In the second part of the course we will explore ethical issues created by the changing face of 21st century warfare and national security. In particular, we’ll discuss ethical issues related to terrorism, torture, non-national military organizations, and military intervention.
