Practical Ethics (PHIL 163)
Instructor: Kiran Bhardwaj. This course meets Monday – Friday from 9:45 AM – 11:15 AM in Peabody 216.
How do we put ethics into practice?
This course will focus on how we think and debate about everyday issues. How ought we treat animals and the environment? Should we permit free speech, even if what is said is hateful or inflammatory? How does our treatment of prisoners reflect our values? What do we think about the ethics of advertising practices? What is economic justice, and what does that mean for the way we think about poverty in North Carolina and beyond? These issues, among others, will be considered in Practical Ethics.
This course is intended to illuminate ethics by reflecting on what we care about in our practices. The class will be discussion-based, and focused on contemporary writings.
