In this course we will read and discuss recent work in the philosophy of language that has applications in social and political theory.  Topics may include subordinating speech, slurs, insinuation, speech acts, pronouns, silencing, and propaganda and we will read contemporary work by Langton, Haslanger, Dotson, Camp, Saul, and Swanson (among others) as well as some classic older material in the philosophy of language by Stalnaker and Lewis.
