Philosophy of Mind (PHIL 840)
Instructor: William Lycan. This seminar meets on Tuesdays from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. in Caldwell 213.
Co-directed with Karen Neander, Guven Guzeldere, and Fred Dretske; the seminar will meet mainly at Duke (with transportation provided by the Robertson bus). We will discuss recent issues in consciousness studies. Topics may include: The Representational theory of sensory qualities vs. aspect perception and attentional phenomena; the latest work on “phenomenal concepts”; phenomenal externalism; “phenomenal intentionality”; Dretske on the difficulty of operationalizing awareness; consciousness of time and change; hallucination; inattentional and change blindness; blindsight; commissurotomy phenomena; MPD; lessons from recent vision science. There will be three external visitors during the semester: Fiona Macpherson, Susanna Siegel, and Ned Block.
