Instructor: Simon Blackburn. This seminar meets on Tuesdays from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. in Caldwell 208.

This is an advanced seminar, presupposing at least some acquaintance with philosophical thinking. We will be looking firstly at the empiricist tradition in early modern philosophy, represented by Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. We will then move via Kant to early twentieth century empiricism, and the subsequent work of writers such as Sellars and Quine. Although the course is largely concerned with texts, the readings will also be taken from the secondary literature and commentaries.
