PHIL 765.001 – Advanced Studies in Value Theory
Instructor: Tom Dougherty. This course meets R 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. in CW 213.
This course will look at recent work on the relatively under-explored topic of how consent can be undermined by various exercises of power. For example, we will look at how consent is impaired by coercion, social pressure, and structural disempowerment. While we will consider sexual consent as a particularly timely application of the course’s topic, we will also aim to understand consent’s general role in normative ethics, as a normative power that can make actions permissible.
