Title: Transparency, Self-Knowledge, and the Sociality of Belief

Abstract: Several prominent accounts of our knowledge of our own beliefs appeal to the transparency of the question “Do you believe that p?” to the question “Is p true?”: we typically answer the former question by considering the latter. In this talk, we argue that such transparency is not a brute fact about belief but rather explicable in terms of the sociality of belief. It is because we are receptive to reasons from others and answerable for reasons to others that we can settle questions about our beliefs by settling the corresponding questions about the world.
