Research, Expertise, and Existential Risk

Friday, April 10th, 3PM ET

Zoom Linkhttps://unc.zoom.us/j/943493437

Science, when done properly, moves slowly. Pandemics move much faster. What balance ought researchers strike between the demands of accuracy and urgency in the race to develop a vaccine and new treatments for COVID-19? How should experts respond to worries about the spread of information—and misinformation—during a pandemic? What lessons should we draw from our current situation about existential risk more generally?

In conversation with Ryan Doody (UNC), Benjamin Hale (University Colorado, Boulder) and Adrian Currie (University of Exeter) will discuss the epistemic, moral, and practical challenges currently facing research scientists involved in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
