“An Ethical Framework for College Sports”
Colleges, students, and the public as a whole have long benefitted from the uniquely American model of sports in the context of higher education. This model, however, is under tremendous strain as programs experience problems with academic misconduct, disproportionate spending on athletics compared to academics and mounting evidence that some programs are driven more by commercial goals than by the welfare and educational needs of the athletes involved. Unprecedented litigation aims to bring a market-based compensation system to big-time football and basketball. These complex challenges highlight the urgent need for a new framework for college sports – a framework that will better serve the public interest, universities and college athletes by prioritizing the educational mission in both operations and financing and protecting college athletes’ educational opportunities and well-being. This lecture will outline the challenges and present a new framework for college sports.
