Symposium on Climate Change Ethics

October 28, 2016 @ 9:30 am - 6:30 pm

Please join the Parr Center for Ethics and Institute for the Environment for a day-long Symposium on Climate Ethics to be held on Friday, October 28 2016 at the UNC-Chapel Hill Student Union. We will have three panel sessions followed by a keynote address.

The first panel session, featuring Gabriela Valdivia (Geography, UNC), Priscilla Wald (English, Duke), and Rebecca Walker (Social Medicine, UNC) will focus on life in the Anthropocene and the value of nature. How will life be different in a world reshaped by climate change? What is the value of nature, and how much of that value, if any, will be lost?

The second panel session, featuring Todd Miller (North Carolina Coastal Federation), Andrew Keeler (Coastal Studies Institute, ECU), and Maria Savasta-Kennedy (Law, UNC), will focus on rising sea levels and duties to future generations. What will the coastal impacts of climate change be? What is our current policy related to these impacts? What should our policy be?

The third panel session, featuring Coral Davenport (NY Times), Victor Flatt (Law, UNC), and Pamela Jagger (Public Policy, UNC), will focus on responsibility for climate change and duties to other nations. What responsibility do different countries have for climate change? What are we all doing about it, and what should we be doing?

We will close the day with a keynote address from Dale Jamieson (Philosophy, Animal Studies, Environmental Studies, NYU) as well as a reception.

This event is free and open to all, though registration is required. All four sessions will leave plenty of time for audience discussion. Please join us for as much of the day as you like!
