Applied Epistemology Project Event for NC Teachers

Political Neutrality in the Classroom: What is it and Should I Value it?
Should teachers refrain from inserting their own political views in the classroom? Should they always strive to give both sides of every issue an equal airing? Can schools remain neutral about polarizing topics without abandoning their commitment to social justice? Pre- and in-service teachers across North Carolina are invited to discuss these questions, and more, with volunteers from the Applied Epistemology Project at UNC-Chapel Hill and the NC State College of Education.
This professional development program centers on the challenges and opportunities posed by America’s “knowledge crisis.” Participants will have the opportunity to think through dilemmas of educational practice that arise when teaching about politically contentious topics, such as the history and legacy of American racism or gender identity. We will deliberate about these issues in an empathetic and collaborative way, alongside fellow educators. The discussion will be scaffolded by an introduction to frameworks and resources that can help us determine when it is appropriate for teachers to privilege some positions over others, to present views in a balanced way, or to avoid controversy altogether.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided to all participants. CEU certificates will be awarded upon completion.
