Philosophy Cafe

February 15, 2018 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Luc Bovens, “Secular Hope in the Face of Death”

We will discuss the various hopes that people have in the face of death other than the hope for eternal life.  Here are some questions that we will take up. What is it to hope that one has lived a worthwhile life? Is there some contemporary analogue to Aristotle claim that death on the battlefield is the most desirable death? “After me the downfall” said Louis XV. What interest should we take in the world in which we are no more? In her poem “Song” Christina Rossetti asks her beloved not sing sad songs when she dies. What kind of attitudes do we hope others will have toward us after we are dead?
Philosophy Cafe at Mystery Brewing Public House is a time to discuss philosophical puzzles and ideas over a beer with a professional philosopher. All levels of philosophical knowledge and experience are welcome!
