PHIL 185.001 – Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art
Instructor: Yifan Li. This course meets MTWRF 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. via remote synchronous (RS) instruction.
What makes a thing beautiful? What is art? What makes them good (or sucks)? In this class, we will survey some interesting answers to these questions in the history of philosophy. In addition, we will also spend some time reviewing some contemporary discussion on one modern art form that is closest to my (and presumably many of your’s) personal life: video games.
There is no prerequisite for taking this class except for interest and a curious mind. However, having some background in philosophy, in particular value theory (e.g., ethics), or some familiarity in some art form, in particular video game, would definitely makes your learning more enjoyable in this class.
