PHIL 440.001 – Philosophy of Mind (Consciousness and Time)
Instructor: Carla Merino-Rajme. This course meets R 12:30 – 3:00 p.m. in CW 213.
What is the relationship between phenomenal consciousness and temporal experience? For example, is experiencing time required for having phenomenal consciousness? Or can a subject be phenomenally conscious while living an experientially atemporal life? What would it take for an AI being to experience time? In this survey course, we will study main theories of consciousness and current debates about temporal experience to attempt to respond to these and related questions.
Recommended prerequisite (for undergraduates): 2 PHIL courses other than PHIL 155, including PHIL 340.
