PHIL 273.001 – Justice, Rights, and the Common Good: Philosophical Perspectives on Social and Economic Issues
Instructor: Samuel Fullhart. This course meets MWF 12:20 – 1:10 p.m. in CW 105.
This course will cover a range of questions about philanthropy and charitable giving more broadly, using the methods of philosophy, politics, and economics. Topics will include: Does philanthropy have a role to play in a democracy and in the pursuit of human flourishing, or it is simply another tool for the wealthy to exercise their already outsized influence on public and private life? What are the consequences and the risks of charitable giving, and to what extent can we predict and measure them? Are we as individuals obligated to give money to charity? If so, how much should we give, and where should we direct our giving?
