PHIL 165.003 – Bioethics
Instructor: Ava Geenen. This course meets MWF 10:10 – 11:00 a.m. in PH 275.
In this class, we’ll begin by examining major ethical frameworks, including utilitarianism, deontology, and feminist care ethics. We will then put these frameworks to work in discussing topics like disability, flourishing, and the concept of health; genetic enhancement and eugenics; the ethics of abortion; death, dying, and euthanasia; paternalism and public health; informed consent and autonomy; and justice and access to health care. Through discussing these sensitive issues, students will reflect on how different ethical frameworks equip us to approach the issues. In the end, students will develop their philosophical abilities and leave the class better prepared to grapple with difficult bioethical questions.
