IDEAs in Action: Which curricular requirements does this course satisfy?
Instructor: William Conner. This course meets MWF 1:25 – 2:15 p.m.GA 210.
Determining the proper aim and scope of medicine, along with the nature of health and wellbeing and how best to promote them, is difficult business. In this class, we will work together to find answers to these problems that lie at the core of bioethics. We’ll begin by examining major ethical frameworks, which we will then put to use in discussing the following topics: informed consent, autonomy, and paternalism; disability, flourishing, and the concept of health; the ethics of abortion and reproductive technologies; death, dying, and euthanasia; competence and decision-making capacity; and justice and access to health care. Through discussion and debate of these difficult and sensitive issues, students will develop and refine their philosophical abilities and will leave the class better equipped to grapple with difficult bioethical questions.
