IDEAs in Action: Which curricular requirements does this course satisfy?

Instructor: Daniel Herrmann (incoming July 1, 2025). This course meets TR 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. in HN 112.

Will advanced AI systems help humanity flourish or threaten our existence? In this course we’ll join the bleeding-edge philosophical discussion of artificial intelligence and our collective future. We’ll critically analyze competing arguments about AI risk, tackle the challenge of aligning powerful systems with human values, and explore the ethical dimensions of creating increasingly autonomous machines. Drawing on tools from decision theory and formal epistemology, we’ll dissect current approaches to AI safety and their limitations. Students will develop the analytical skills to evaluate bold claims about AI’s trajectory and join the crucial conversations shaping how society governs these transformative technologies. No prior technical background required—just bring your curiosity about one of the most consequential developments of our time.
