Speaker Series: Rachel Barney (Toronto)

Rachel Barney will give a talk titled, “Three Kinds of Socratic Courage”.

Abstract:

Courage is a major but rarely discussed theme of Plato’s early dialogues, exemplified by Socrates in the Apology and Phaedo and discussed in the Protagoras and (inconclusively) in the Laches. But what does Plato think courage is? At least three different conceptions can be found in the early dialogues, each having some resonance with our intuitive ideas but also presenting philosophical problems.
