Philosophy in 15 Minutes

September 15, 2023 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Join the UNC Philosophy department for a series of short presentations on intriguing Philosophical ideas.

(1) Welcome and Introduction: Matt Kotzen (Host)

(2) Elijah Parish: Introducing the Undergraduate Philosophy Club

(3) Carla Merino-Rajme (15 Minutes Presentation): Does Time Really Pass?

Most agree that we experience time as passing. Many metaphysicians, however, believe that time does not pass. Why do they think so? Are they right?

(4) Ellie Riggsbee: Introducing the James Lesher Opportunity Fund

(5) Serah Culler and Susanna King: Introducing the Parr Center for Ethics

(6) Alan Nelson (15 Minutes Presentation): Thinking about Language and Talking about Thinking

What comes first: thought or language? Philosophers have given some interesting and surprising answers to this question. You will get an overview of a few hundred years in fifteen minutes.

(7) Willow Yang: Introducing the PPE program

(8) Gabriella Hulsey (15 Minutes Presentation): Being Criticized is an Opportunity

Getting defensive in response to being criticized is epistemically and morally problematic, especially if you want to be an ally. If you want to be a good ally, you ought to cultivate an attitude of curiosity and openness in response to being criticized for being a bad (morally speaking) ally.

Refreshments provided after the event.
