Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is heavily regulated across the United States. Laws and regulations pertaining to ECT for patients who lack decision making capacity vary significantly, with many jurisdictions imposing restrictions on ECT for incapacitated patients. Limiting access to an effective medical treatment based on decisional incapacity raises important ethical questions, several of which will be explored in this session.
