Balter Fellowship Seminar Series
April 18, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
We would like to share information about Philosophy Reimagined, an upcoming series of events April 18-20 being organized and facilitated by the 2022 Balter Fellows, a cohort of undergraduate students interested in diversifying the field of philosophy. Our Fellows have organized a three-part seminar series, which undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty are all welcome to attend. Feel free to join one session, or all three! Catering will be provided. Please see below for a brief description of each session.
When: Each session will be from 7-8pm in Caldwell 208.
4/18: Mental Illness and the Philosophy of Psychiatry: What do we mean when we talk about “mental illnesses?” The sorts of questions we will discuss are along the lines of “What makes psychopathology qualify as pathology (or does it always qualify)?” and “What is the kind of (dys)function are we talking about when we talk about a person’s mental illness (biological, societal, cultural)?
4/19: Collective Consciousness: How do people experience self-hood? How do people go about creating and navigating their own self-awareness and self-identity? Further, how do people’s conceptualizations of self go on to become larger group identities? Whether it is collective racial/ethnic identity, national identity, community based on sexuality and/or gender, etc., we are seeing people become increasingly conscious of their membership(s) in some sort of collective identities, larger than themselves. What does this mean?
4/20: Feminist Philosophy of Sex: What are some feminist perspectives on sex positivity vs negativity? Can we provide a philosophical assessment of romantic/sexual relationships among Gen Z? What can we learn from contemporary feminist thinkers on these important and relevant topics?
Participants don’t need to prepare anything in advance. Expect a casual opportunity for discussion and connection!
