Instructor: Lauren Townsend. This course meets MWF 8:00 – 8:50 a.m. in CW 105.

This course is an introduction to some of the issues studied in the field of philosophy. We will sample a bit of many different areas of philosophy including epistemology (what, whether, and how we know things), ethics (how should we treat others? what is a good life?), Existentialism (is there meaning in life and what is it?), feminism, philosophy of race, philosophy of religion, and philosophy of emotions. Students will work on their philosophical reasoning, that is, their ability to evaluate and articulate reasons, as well as their writing skills. Assignments will include writing about and analyzing historical and contemporary texts and possibly films.
