Philosophy of Western Religion (PHIL 134/001)

This class is an introduction to some of the key issues in the philosophy of western religion. Our texts will be both historical and contemporary, and cover a number of traditional questions that are central to understanding the nature of religion and its place in our lives. The core themes of the class will be (i) the nature of the distinction between faith and reason, (ii) the nature and existence of God, (iii) the relationship between religion and morality, (iv) the relationship between religion and science, and, finally, (v) the contemporary so-called “new atheism” movement.
