Instructor: Douglas MacLean. This course meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00 – 3:15 p.m. in Bingham 101.

In the first part of this course, we will examine the views of G.E. Moore, C.L. Stevenson, J.L. Mackie, and others, whose views set the stage for normative and metaethical theories in the twentieth century.  In the second part of the course, we will read more recent articles that defend theories that are, broadly speaking, consequentialist, Kantian, Aristotelian, or intuitionistic.  The last part of the course will be devoted to a close reading of one important contemporary theory, probably the theory developed by T.M. Scanlon.
