2012 Summer Internships
The Philosophy Department has a number of unpaid summer internships available this summer for those interested in philosophy. These are, unfortunately, unpaid, though we hope to provide a small honorarium. More internships will be added soon.
Parr Center for Ethics
The Parr Center for Ethics provides a limited number of unpaid summer Undergraduate Fellowships (minimum six week commitment) to aid the Center in pursuing its mission. Interns may participate in event planning sessions, take on special projects, bolster our media positioning, and help with our successful and growing High School Ethics Bowl program. Interested parties can find more information and directions on how to apply at http://parrcenter.unc.edu/involve/become-an-undergraduate-fellow
Expressive Communication and the Origins of Meaning
With the support of the National Science Foundation, Professors Dorit Bar-On and Mitch Green (who is at the University of Virginia) have launched a research project on the origins of linguistic communication in the expressive communication of non-linguistic animals. One or two internships are available for students with interest and background in linguistics, the evolution of language, animal communication, and select topics in developmental psychology. The internships provide an opportunity to become part of an ongoing working group that includes faculty and graduate students. Work will include surveying literature, bibliographical searches, and research discussions. Available in May and June of 2012.
If you are interested please contact Dorit Bar-On at dbar@email.unc.edu.
Philosophy, Politics and Economics Program
The PPE Program hopes to get the help of a few students interested in building the PPE Program. Especially valuable would be help planning events for the coming year and developing profiles of PPE students that will provide a useful sense of the value of the minor.

Create an Online Course and Mobile App
This internship is an opportunity to create an online course in critical reasoning -- a course that could involve automated grading, so that it could be offered at very little instructional cost, and one that we might be able to develop in-house, so that it would involve no licensing fees for us. If the course is automated to a sufficient degree, this online course could turn into a mobile app that would ask and answer multiple choice critical reasoning questions for those who are interested in sharpening their critical reasoning skills on their own.
This is the kind of experience that could be extremely valuable to any undergrad who is interested in going into the fast-growing field of educational software development. It would also be extremely valuable to any undergraduate who is interested in pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities in mobile app development.
If you are interested, please contact Professor Ram Neta at neta@email.unc.edu or 919-962-3314.
