LEARN NC and UNC Philosophy Department Collaborate to Provide Teacher Resource. “Philosophy 101 for Educators” offers strategies for adapting instruction, complete lesson plans

A new online guide designed to help K-12 teachers incorporate philosophy into their instruction has been published by LEARN NC and the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Philosophy.

The guide, “Philosophy Resources for Educators,” includes an introduction to methods of philosophical discourse, a bibliography of both online and print resources for bringing philosophy into the classroom, and grade-specific lesson plans and sets of teaching strategies and materials. The materials are available for free.

“The LEARN NC Philosophy edition will serve as an excellent resource for K-12 classroom teachers interested in introducing philosophy to their students,” said Michael Dean Burroughs, director of the UNC Philosophy Outreach Program. “With lesson plans, clear descriptions of areas of philosophy, and advice on philosophical pedagogy, this open-web resource will greatly advance pre-college philosophy in North Carolina and continue the valuable work of LEARN NC.”

The guide is available at http://www.learnnc.org/lp/editions/philosophy-resources.

LEARN NC, an outreach program of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Education, serves more than 30,000 teachers and students online daily, delivering continually updated lesson plans, best practices and classroom content to schools in 50 states, 145 countries, and all 115 North Carolina school systems via its website at www.learnnc.org.

The UNC Philosophy Outreach Program promotes philosophy in various parts of the community through seminars, consultations, and targeted outreach initiatives. More information is available here.
