Important Information Regarding New Course Numbers

• Courses listed on the course description page are in the following form: Title (new course number) (old course number)

• 400-level courses are open to advanced undergraduate students

• The first digit in the (new) course number indicates the relative level of the course, with 2_ _- level courses presupposing less than do 3_ _- level course, which in turn presuppose less than 4_ _- level courses.

• The second digit in the (new) course number indicates which area, broadly conceived, the course is in. Thus the _1_ and _2_ courses are in the history of philosophy, the _3_ and _4_ courses are in metaphysics and epistemology, the _5_ courses are in philosophy of science and logic, the _6_, _7_, and _8_ courses are in ethics, value theory, and political philosophy

• The 700 level (formerly 200 level) courses differ from 800 level (formerly 300 level) courses primarily in that the 700 level courses should be somewhat comprehensive in their scope whereas the 800 level course are to be more focused.
