Craig Warmke will present his talk, “Modal Intensionalism”.

Abstract:

A possible world is a way the world could have been. Given that there are infinitely many ways the world could have been, a proposition is necessary according to possible worlds semantics when it is true in infinitely many possible worlds. Yet human beings don’t have the cognitive power to survey infinitely many possible worlds. We claim to know that some propositions are necessary, but possible worlds semantics seems to put the necessity of those propositions beyond our ken.  I develop an original semantics for modal propositional logic whose definition of necessity makes a proposition’s necessity accessible to finite minds.
