Abstract:

When I think about schools, the first problem that comes to mind is that the paradigm of a legitimate market relation presupposes that the transaction is between autonomous adults. But schools are dealing with consumers and clients whose autonomy is very much in doubt. That is the first problem, and it’s big.  But a second problem bothers me more. Namely, our schools are under pressure to operate more like a business, but what kind of business?  What would it mean to be a really good provider in the field of education? What would it be like to know we have a great product?  To show we have a great product?  To verify that we have a great product?
